How do you learn the Alexander Technique?
The Alexander Technique is taught in a series of one-on-one, private lessons lasting 30-40 minutes. In the lesson you are taught to consciously reduce or stop habitual interference with the natural relationship between the head, neck, and torso. Using verbal instruction and gentle hands on guidance, the teacher then guides you through a series of simple everyday movements in a non-habitual and healthier way. Through gaining more ability to recognize and stop the habits that interfere with your body’s natural coordination, you learn a new and better use of yourself and the optimal amount of muscle tension needed for various activities.

Can I learn the Alexander Technique on my own?
The Alexander Technique is about changing inefficient habits. Habits are, by their nature, unconscious. Often what "feels right" to us is not the most efficient use of the body. The trained eyes and hands of a teacher can help you begin to perceive your ingrained patterns and choose non-habitual and healthier ways of moving.

What can I expect from studying the Technique?
Through study of the Alexander Technique you come to understand how your body can move most efficiently. You become much more aware of your habits that put unnecessary strain and stress on your body and interfere with your body's natural poise and coordination. As you learn to move more easily and with less strain, you make surprising improvements in how you look and feel. As you learn to apply the principles of the Alexander Technique, you begin practicing an effective, lasting method of self care.

How long does it take?
The average student should expect to notice the effects of studying the Alexander Technique after about 10 -12 lessons. Typically a series of 30 lessons taken consistently, that is once, twice, or three times a week, is recommended to establish a good foundation in the Alexander Technique. Many students choose to continue taking lessons beyond this to further refine their skills under the guidance of a trained teacher. Taking lessons close together, especially at the onset of study, offers students a clearer understanding of how to apply the Alexander Technique and encourages more lasting change.

Will I always need lessons?
No. The Alexander Technique is method of self care. After a series of lessons with a certified teacher you should be able to apply the Alexander Technique to anything you do from dancing, to using the computer, to sitting through a long meeting. Once you have a good foundation, you will be able to continue building your skills on your own.
