The Alexander Technique is a practical method for learning to move with less effort and more ease

Anyone can benefit from learning the Alexander Technique. Learning it can help you:

·         Improve posture, balance and overall coordination

·         Move with less strain and more ease and efficiency

·         Reduce and in some cases eliminate musculoskeletal pain

·         Breathe and use your voice more easily

·         Manage stress more effectively

·         Improve skills in activities such as singing, dancing, athletics or playing a musical instrument

The basic premise of the Alexander Technique is that when the neck muscles do not overwork the head remains poised on top of the spine. This relationship between the head and the spine is of utmost importance. How we manage this relationship—compressed or free—helps to determine the quality of the body’s overall coordination and sets the stage for movement to be effortful or easy.

Though it has therapeutic side effects, the Alexander Technique is primarily an educational method. The practitioner is called a teacher, the private session—a lesson, and the client—a student.

Alexander Technique is typically taught in a series of one-on-one, private lessons lasting 30-40 minutes. In the lesson you are taught to consciously reduce or stop habitual interference with the natural relationship between the head, neck, and torso. Using verbal instruction and gentle hands on guidance, the teacher then guides you through a series of simple everyday movements in a non-habitual and healthier way. Through gaining more ability to recognize and stop the habits that interfere with your body’s natural coordination, you learn a new and better use of yourself and the optimal amount of muscle tension needed for various activities.

Students who are most likely to benefit from study of the Alexander Technique have a willingness to learn about and take responsibility for themselves and do not currently experience a level of pain or dysfunction that would preclude learning.

A nice short introduction to the Alexander Technique is the following video produced as part of a major study published in the British Medical Journal showing the effectiveness of the Alexander Technique for back pain sufferers is available at the following link
